Welcome to my swim blog. It's all about my favorite past time and passion...swimming in the ocean, primarily in La Jolla, California, but also wherever the tides take me. I enjoy playing with and watching all marine critters: fish, birds, sea lions and even sharks. The ocean is my home. Welcome to my home!

Sevengill Sharks Sightings In La Jolla!

Saturday morning, some might say I didn't know which way I was swimming!  I swam to the Marine room (via the 1/4 buoy) - back to the 1/4 (picking up Deb and Janet along the way) - virtual 1/2  - Marine Rm (dropping them off with Steve and the others) - 1/4 buoy and finally, back in...then off to PARTAY with the Big Chillers...great fun had by all I might add.  On my swim trek I saw (along with a bazillion other various fish) a ~9 foot Sevengill Shark between the 1/4 buoy and the Marine Room (about 2/3 of the way over)!  I was swimming with my H2O Audio, as I am wont to do, and noticed this monster of a fish about 8-10 feet below me swimming parallel along my path.  This went on for a couple of minutes (seemed like forever) and then just like that, as soon as the song changed to Jimi Hendrix "Valleys of Neptune," she was gone!  Surprisingly, she must have poor taste in music...a most excellent song!

Later, I learned I was not the only one to see this creature...Dan told me of a 5-6 footer he encountered.  And a few others have also been seeing things.  Great time regaling fish tales...they went down nicely with beer!

My swim bud, Ruth, ran into Chris later in the afternoon and he confirmed the following:
"...a sevengill (that he saw and some others have seen) 4" inches short of NINE FEET has taken up residence near the marine room and landslide area.  Scripps plucked it out and measured it."  Chris saw it in 10' of water.  HOLY CR*P!

This is an old video/news cast (below), but informative until the broadcasters start talking about Tiger sharks...I think they're referring to Leopard sharks (a BIG difference).
