Welcome to my swim blog. It's all about my favorite past time and passion...swimming in the ocean, primarily in La Jolla, California, but also wherever the tides take me. I enjoy playing with and watching all marine critters: fish, birds, sea lions and even sharks. The ocean is my home. Welcome to my home!

Otter-ific

I love otters...the California Sea Otter is too darn cute.  Sorry Dad!  I've always liked them...even if they eat my oh so rare abalone.  You see, when I was younger, my Dad, his buddies would go diving off Point Loma.  There was the most bountious abalone are there.  We could free dive for them in those days...we're talking in 15-20 feet of water!!  And if I was a good girl, I got to tag along with the guys.  Maybe not the best place for a young girl, I mean you had 4 or 5 men and their sons and me.  We'd leave at o'dark-thirty in the morning only stopping to pickup doughnuts, Fritos, soda, beer, nuts, coffee at the store and gas for the boat and bait to fish with after the dive...heaven!  Launching the boat at Shelter Island, I assumed my role as First Mate and unloaded the boat from the trailer, bringing her around to the dock and tieing off to load everyone on.  Then Dad would take the helm out into the harbor and I would sit in MY place on the bow with feet dangling and the wind blowing, eyes watering and sea spray dousing me...oh yeah, this was IT.

Back in those days, the gear was crude, but the times were golden...and the abs, ohhh the abs!  We had the best abalone fry EVAR!  I can still taste it, though I can no longer afford it. It retails near $100 a plate.  I just want to cry.

Even though these cute little beasts eat my abalone, I can't quite dislike them...too cute
